Industries
Architectural, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Industry
According to the US Department of Commerce, the United States is one of the leading
construction markets in the world, employing 7.9 million workers and accounting
for nearly 8 percent of US gross domestic product (GDP). The value of construction
spending in 2006 was $1,198 billion, a respectable 4.8 percent above the $1,143.7
billion spent in 2005. From a global perspective, 80 percent of the world’s
construction activity actually occurs outside the United States.
AEC Software Industry
The AEC software industry is quickly becoming a $1 billion market. Construction
specific software is usually categorized into CAD, cost estimating, project management,
scheduling, and job cost software. Since over 90% of US firms are under 35 employees,
the small and mid-sized business (SMB) market is the fastest growing business sector.
Currently, Microsoft and Intuit have the largest market share in this segment that
use their business productivity (Microsoft Office) and accounting software (Intuit
QuickBooks) applications.
Recently, the AEC software industry has seen several acquisitions: Sage Group purchasing
Timberline and Masterbuilder, Meridian Project Systems being acquired by Trimble,
and AutoDesk acquiring Constructware.
